Upgraded Two Mile UV Treatment Plant

Delivery of an upgraded UV water treatment solution at the Two Mile intake near Sunshine Bay.

About the project

In response to the cryptosporidium outbreak that affected Queenstown’s water supply back in October 2023, we installed a temporary UV treatment solution at Fernhill Reservoir above the Two Mile water intake to provide safe drinking water in the area.

Now, we’re working to install a more permanent and larger UV treatment plant, which will be located next to the Two Mile intake and Sunshine Bay Trail and ensure drinking water in Queenstown, Fernhill, and Sunshine Bay remains safe and compliant.

Once installation is complete, the temporary UV treatment solution used by Fernhill Reservoir will be redeployed elsewhere in the district.

Work will be carried out by Fulton Hogan, with assistance from Veolia.

What's the latest?

We’re currently working to investigate the site, which will include clearing several trees and some shrubs before establishing a fence and completing further geotechnical investigations.

We’ll also be setting up safety and pedestrian measures in the area from Monday 24 June 2024 and a temporary detour for a small section of Sunshine Bay Trail.

What to expect

As with any construction project, there will be some disruption while work is undertaken. This is likely to include some noise, vibration, and construction machinery movements in the area, but these will be minimised as much as possible.

Sunshine Bay Trail is a popular walking track that runs alongside the existing Two Mile water intake and the future location of the upgraded UV treatment plant. To minimise disruption and keep pedestrians safe, we’ve consulted with Queenstown Trails Trust and QLDC’s Parks team to create a temporary detour for part of the trail, running along the beach and the edge of the lake for approximately 150 metres.

Crews will ensure pedestrian access is maintained and any changes to the construction site will be shared in advance.

Construction dates

Work will begin on Monday 24 June 2024 and is expected to take approximately six months to complete, finishing in December 2024.
