Glenorchy Water Treatment Upgrades

Delivery of a new UV water treatment solution in Glenorchy.

About the project

In response to the cryptosporidium outbreak that affected Queenstown’s water supply back in October 2023, we’re working to upgrade several treatment sites throughout the district to provide safe and fully compliant drinking water.

As part of these upgrades, we’re starting work in September 2024 to install a new UV treatment solution in Glenorchy, next to the tonwship’s existing water reservoirs.

We’ll also be upgrading the borefield on Glenorchy-Queenstown Road at the edge of the township.

Work will be carried out by Fulton Hogan with assistance from Veolia.

What's the latest?

28 November 2024

Crews are entering the final stages of construction, with testing of the new water treatment upgrades to begin on Monday 2 December 2024.

We hope to have the treatment solution operating in mid-December.

What to expect

As with any construction project, minor disruptions should be expected while work is undertaken. This is likely to include some noise and construction machinery movements in the area, but these will be minimised as much as possible.

Shoulder closures will be required along part of Glenorchy-Queenstown Road near the entrance to Glenorchy once work begins on upgrades at the borefield, but this isn’t expected until early October.

Construction dates

Work to install the new UV treatment solution starts on Monday 16 September.

Upgrades at the borefield will begin in early October.

We expect all work to be completed by the end of November and the treatment solution to be operating in mid-December.
