Ballantyne Road Upgrade
A project is underway to vastly improve safety on Ballantyne Road, Wānaka.
About the project Road closure Other things to expect Get in touchAbout the project
Jointly funded by Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, the upgrade will start on 3 December and address a number of safety issues such as inconsistent surfacing, limited driver sight lines, a lack of road markings and narrow roadways.
Fulton Hogan has been appointed to complete the project and expect to have this project completed by the end of October 2021.
Key improvements include
-
The sealing of 4km of unsealed road and clear zone on both sides, significantly reducing the risk of crashes in the area.
-
A low speed environment by design
-
One metre wide sealed shoulders to allow safer opportunities for walking and cycling
-
Improved drainage
-
The relocation of 40 power poles in conjunction with Aurora
We will also be working with Chorus, Spark and Vodafone to facilitate planned future network upgrades between Wanaka and Luggate and avoid works on the upgraded road at a later date
Road closure
For the project to be completed safely, Ballantyne Road will be closed to through traffic starting on Thursday 3 December.
Our contractors will ensure access is maintained for residents living along Ballantyne Road (including those of Boundary and Morris Road) and essential services over this period.
For all others a detour will be in place via Riverbank Road & SH6.
Please allow extra time for your journey if you're driving out this way and follow all signage in place.
Other things to expect
There are some other things to be aware of while the work is underway:
Fence Relocation
Where existing fencing is within road reserve, the fenceline will be reinstated on the legal boundary. Council will cover all costs associated with the relocation. Where the age and condition makes relocating the fence unviable, Council will replace the fence like for like.
If you're affected by this, Fulton Hogan will be in touch with you soon to co-ordinate the work.
Accessways
Council will seal existing accessways to the road boundary.
Tree removals in road reserve
A number of trees will need to be removed from within the road reserve to accommodate the improvements.
All care will be taken to ensure trees that are to be retained are not damaged by construction activity.
In lieu of removing trees along Ballantyne Road, we’ll be working with Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust and the local community to support the planting of the wetland area adjacent to Atherton Place along the track between Bremner Bay and Penrith Beach
Tree pruning
To ensure the route is freely accessible on completion, a number of trees along the route are required to be pruned to give a clearance from the ground of 5m.
Dust
Water trucks will be used to suppress dust during the construction period.
