UV treatment now operating

Great news! The new containerised water treatment plant on Church Road is now fully connected to the bores near the Upper Clutha River Track and operating, providing UV treatment to Luggate’s drinking water.

Some minor works continue in and around Luggate - more on that below!

About the project

In response to the cryptosporidium outbreak that affected Queenstown’s water supply back in October 2023, we’re working to upgrade several treatment sites throughout the district to provide safe and fully compliant drinking water.

We already planned to introduce a new water scheme in Luggate in 2028, given more people are expected to make the township their home in the future and the existing water supply infrastructure is unable to meet that potential demand.

We’re now bringing that project forward and accelerating delivery of this infrastructure as part of works to introduce a protozoa barrier (UV disinfection) for Luggate.

Upgrades in Luggate will include access to a new water source through two new supply bores, new pipes to connect this infrastructure to the existing network, the new ultraviolet (UV) treatment solution, and development of a new long-term reservoir site.

We expect the new protozoa barrier (UV disinfection) to be operating by February 2026.

The contract for this work was awarded to Fulton Hogan.

What to expect

As with any large construction project, there will be some disruption around Luggate while this project is being delivered.

Currently, work continues to build the bore enclosures and to finish landscaping alongside the river track, which we expect to all be completed by early March.

Crews have also started work to improve the wider Luggate water network by creating a second water supply pipeline from Church Road, alongside the Luggate Creek Track and on to a connection point in Harris Place. 

Stop/go is temporarily operating during the day on a short section of Church Road while crews work at one end of the second water supply pipeline.

Over the next few weeks, crews will move from Church Road through to Harris Place, via the Luggate Creek Track.

Once work on the track begins, a minor detour will be required to guide pedestrians and cyclists safely around the construction site. Please follow the detour signs and take extra care when using the temporary track.

Harris Place will also need to be restricted to resident traffic only from late February, while we install and connect the new water supply pipeline in the area. Access to properties will be maintained, but residents should expect minor delays when being guided safely around the worksite.

Construction dates

Work is nearly complete and the new protozoa barrier (UV disinfection) is now operating.

All remaining work will be completed by the end of March 2026.
