Alpha Series stormwater modifications
Project Status
Location Map
About the project
Bullock Creek comes from a spring-fed wetland and is a highly valued feature of Wānaka, treasured for its ecological significance and community heritage.
The reserve has benefited from years of volunteer work, including the removal of invasive species and the planting of thousands of native plants. And it remains a spectacular spot to visit, especially for a relaxing walk along the Creek’s boardwalk.
Several modifications are planned for the Alpha Series stormwater retention pond upstream of the area to address the volume of water that flows through the reserve and down Bullock Creek to Lake Wānaka. These works will help ensure a more gradual release of water into Bullock Creek, while improving water quality and also protecting the wider ecosystem.
As part of this project, enhancements include:
- Modifications to the existing outlet on the nearby retention pond to reduce standing water, allowing for more gradual release of water from the pond.
- Water quality improvements through a longer and modified flow path and the planting of hundreds of native plants, providing a reduced but consistent flow of water while enabling it to contact newly planted areas within the reserve.
- Installation of a flow retention device on the nearby retention pond to help manage high discharge rates.
Click here for a visual of the enhancements.
QLDC awarded the tender for these works to Fulton Hogan.
Timeline
Work on these stormwater enhancements is expected to begin on Monday 23 February and will be completed by the end of March.
As part of QLDC’s Long Term Plan 2024-2034, further work is expected to divert stormwater flows away from Bullock Creek by 2029.
What to expect
As with any large construction project, some disruption is likely around the western end of Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs Wetland while crews work in the area.
Key disruptions include construction machinery and truck movements near the site, and may include some noise and vibration too.
Access to the reserve will be maintained at all times, but a small detour will be in place for pedestrians near the stormwater retention pond.
Several trees will need to be removed for the modified flow path, but these will be replaced 2:1 in line with QLDC’s Tree Policy.
Crews will be working on weekdays from 8.00am to 6.00pm.
Any questions?
If you have any questions or concerns about these works, please contact QLDC’s Services team by calling 03 443 0024 or emailing services@qldc.govt.nz
