Timeframes

Kā akawā

The Resource Management Act of 1991 has set specific time frames for deciding on resource consent applications based on whether or not notification is needed:

  • 10 working days for Controlled Activity Land Use (not subdivision) applications, and Deemed Permitted Boundary Activities

  • 20 working days for a non-notified consent

  • 100 working days for a limited notified consent

  • 130 working days for a publicly notified consent

A ‘working day’ doesn’t include weekends, public holidays, or the days from December 20 to January 10 (inclusive) each year. If an application is paused (e.g. when more information is needed) then this time will not be considered as part of the working days to complete.

The actual time it takes to decide on an application can vary based on:

  • the proposal’s complexity

  • the application’s quality

  • the need for additional information

  • the requirement for specialist advice
