Mascot Search

We're on the hunt for a new mascot to represent Sport & Recreation programmes!

It's time for a Sport & Recreation Mascot!

We're on the hunt for a new Sport & Recreation mascot. You'll see some ballot boxes near reception where children can cast their vote!

This figure will lead promotion material for all our activities and programmes aimed at children. These programmes include our Swim School, birthday party packages, school holiday programmes, climbing lessons and signage across our facilities.

What are the choices?

The choice for mascot is between Puka the Pūteketeke (crested Grebe) and Rata The Ruru.

How and where to vote

You'll see some voting boxes near reception (at Wānaka Recreation Centre and Queenstown Events Centre)!

To vote, simply ask our customer service task for a token and drop it in the box of the mascot that you like best.

Who can vote?

Anyone can vote. Although we're particularly interested in children under the age of 12 casting their votes as this is who the mascot will be aimed at with future promotional material.

When will a winner be decided and what's next?

The voting will close Sunday 11 August. The votes will be tallied across all facilities and then a decision will be made based on which mascot has the most votes across all voting locations.

What's happened so far?

The most obvious question remaining is how did we arrive at these two choices?

Well it's been a long internal process of brainstorming with staff and we ended up with a number of options. The Ruru, a goat, and a couple of other animals that were mascot worthy.

We then had the School Holiday Programme kids vote on their favourite which was the Ruru.

The staff favourite is Puka the Pūteketeke.

So now we've got two initial options designed and need to put them to a wider vote!
