The Queenstown Lakes district is a highly sought after location for filmmakers.  It’s the third largest production hub in New Zealand, with stunning natural landscapes complemented by an experienced pool of local crew, equipment providers and film support services.  International productions that have shot in the district include MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT, A WRINKLE IN TIME and THE HOBBIT TRILOGY.  The district is also a popular location for international television commercials.

Film Queenstown Lakes

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has an in-Council film office within its Economic Development department that acts as a point of coordination for screen activity in the region. The office:

  • Provides advice, information and support to filmmakers and screen productions

  • Connects productions with relevant local authorities, location owners and community leaders

  • Fosters a film-friendly environment with ease of access to locations and navigable permitting systems

  • Helps to grow and develop the local screen sector – its people, businesses and capability

  • Promotes the district as a filming destination, in collaboration with Film Otago Southland

Apply for a film permit

Any commercial filming that takes place on Queenstown Lakes District Council land (including roads) will first require an approved film permit from us. You may also require resource consents for bigger and/or long-term productions.
