Trade Waste Registration
Trade waste is any commercial, educational or industrial liquid or gas waste from a trade premise that is disposed of through our wastewater system.
This includes discharge from restaurants, takeaway outlets, food processors, car wash outlets, service stations, churches, schools, chemical manufacturers and much more.
Liquid or gas trade waste is an issue that needs to be addressed in the Queenstown Lakes District. It has a direct effect on the health of our waterways and the cost of maintenance and repairs of our infrastructure.
The new Integrated Three Waters Bylaw 2020 and Administration Manual came into effect on 1 July 2021. It puts an increased focus on the environment by providing a more holistic approach to providing safe drinking water, keeping our lakes, rivers and environment clean and protecting our infrastructure from misuse.
This new Bylaw will bring in a number of changes across the district. One upcoming change will mean trade premises will need to apply for a Trade Waste Consent or Approval Notice to discharge trade waste into the wastewater network. We’re finalising the process for this at the moment and will share further details with trade premises very soon.
